Why Are My Gums Bleeding When I Brush?

Posted on 3/7/2022 by San Francisco Dental Arts
Why Are My Gums Bleeding When I Brush?Many people have experienced gum bleeding at least once or severally. If you have experienced some minor bleeding, it might be something not to worry about, but if you continually bleed whenever you brush your teeth, something might be wrong. Seeking advice from our dental cleaning should be your first step, but here is what could be causing the gum bleeding;

Poor Dental Hygiene

Poor dental hygiene allows plaque and tartar to build up around your teeth, creating bacteria around your gum line. This bacteria, in turn, cause gums inflammation and redness, which makes it easier for you to bleed whenever your brush or floss your teeth.

Excessive Brushing and Flossing

Brushing or flossing should be done gently and maybe twice a day, depending on your dentist's advice. Too much brushing, especially with a stiff brush, is one of the main reasons why your gums bleed. Stiff brushes do not clean the teeth, you only need to apply the right brushing technique, and your teeth will be clean. When you use a brush with tough bristles, you expose your gums to inflammation, bleeding, or even gum loss.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a gum disease usually caused by bacteria when plaque buildup around your teeth. The condition creates swollen, red, and irritated gums. The good thing is that this condition can be treated by brushing and flossing correctly. However, you might experience slight bleeding when brushing, especially if your gums are swollen or red.

Medications

Some medications like blood-thinning drugs can cause your gums to bleed. This is because they decrease the ability of the blood to clot. Apart from that, over-the-counter medication can sometimes lead to gum bleeding. If your bleeding is serious, it is advisable to stop the medication immediately. Also, contact our dental cleaning to get help with your gum bleeding. Our dentist may provide you with some home tips to stop the bleeding as you wait for your appointment.
