Night Guard San Francisco CA

Image of a night guard at San Francisco Dental Arts in San Francisco, CAIf you’re suffering from teeth grinding (bruxism), you will need a mouthguard to wear at night to protect your teeth. Teeth grinding can cause headaches, damaged enamel, jaw ache and restless sleeping. On top of this, repairing teeth damaged by teeth grinding can be expensive. At San Francisco Dental Arts we offer custom-made mouthguards to wear when sleeping, in order to relieve symptoms of bruxism.

Why Should I Wear One?

If you constantly suffer from toothache, head pains and a sore jaw, speaking to one of our dentists about bruxism, can help you discover how to relieve the symptoms. They will be able to advise you on the best course of action to prevent any damage to your teeth. Tooth enamel does not grow back, so preventing any chipping or cracking from grinding will prevent any expensive procedures from needing to take place.

The doctor may advise a change in diet or medication to reduce teeth grinding, less alcohol and caffeine can help reduce symptoms of bruxism. But if the grinding persists, a mouthguard is the best course of action.

Other options such as teeth straightening and NTIs (nociceptive trigeminal inhibition splint) are also a possible solution to your night-time teeth grinding. Teeth straightening is a more invasive solution to bruxism, and NTIs do not provide the same amount of protection as a mouthguard and can lead to teeth misalignment. Talk to one of our dentists for possible solutions to your bruxism, and they can advise you on the best solution for you.

How Do Mouthguards Work?

A mouthguard will separate the two arches of teeth in order to stop them from grinding. The teeth will rub against the mouthguard, wearing down the rubber instead. There are several different types of mouthguard, including ones you can mold at home. However, these often do not fit properly and can be uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time.

If you’re suffering from teeth grinding, book an appointment with one of our dentist’s and they will be able to make a custom mouthguard for you. By taking a mold of your teeth, a dental lab can create a custom-made mouthguard that will perfectly fit and protect your teeth.

Custom-made mouthguards last much longer than the ones you can purchase in a sports store and offer better protection for the teeth. Our mouthguards are also customizable, you can add different colors or patterns, your name on the side, even glitter can be placed in the mouthguard. Ask our dentists what customization options we currently have on offer.

Mouthguards can also help with sleep apnea and snoring as they keep your airway open by lowering the bottom jaw. This can prove to not only have benefits for yourself, but for a partner you sleep with too.

San Francisco Dental Arts advises custom-made mouthguards for anyone suffering from persistent teeth grinding at night. Damage caused by bruxism can be permanent and expensive to repair. Comparatively, a mouthguard is a good solution that can save hassle and pain further down the line. Talk to one of our dentists for the best solution for your bruxism.
