a person's with mouth pain in San Francisco, CAThe term canker sore sounds horrible, and if you are in pain from a canker sore, it is a horrible term. Canker sores, or mouth ulcers, can make it difficult for you to eat or drink. Here is some basic information about canker sores and how you can get rid of them if they are causing you pain.

What Is A Canker Sore?

Canker sores look like a depression or a hollowed-out area in your mouth. It can be white or yellow, and a bright red area usually surrounds it. Canker sores can be very painful, especially if you are trying to eat or drink. They have several causes, according to researchers. You may be susceptible to canker sores if you are stressed out if you have hormonal changes due to menstruation, poor diet, or even food allergies.

The pain from canker sores happens when the sore is close to a nerve in your mouth. Your mouth is full of nerves, so it is easy to understand why canker sores can be so painful.

Canker sores are not infectious, and bacteria or a virus do not cause them. That doesn't mean you have to suffer.

Treating Canker Sores

If you are suffering from canker sores, there are things you can do to make your mouth feel better. First, you can start with home remedies. Try rinsing your mouth with either baking soda and water or salt and water. You will want to dissolve either a half-teaspoon of baking soda or salt into a half cup of water and rinse your mouth three times a day.

If treating your sore with a home remedy doesn't work, it's time to try over-the-counter methods. There are lots of creams or gels on the market to treat canker sores.

What if you are still suffering? If you have a canker sore that doesn't go away, it's time to visit the dentist. It may be that you will need a prescription dental rinse or even steroids to make that pesky canker sore go away.
